New Report Says iPhone SE 4 to Resemble Base iPhone 14 Model

When it eventually arrives, the handset will replace the current third-generation iPhone SE, finally retiring the iPhone 8-style design used in the last two generations of Apple’s budget iPhone model. In its place, the iPhone SE 4 will feature a more up-to-date look, sporting a larger display and more closely resembling last year’s base iPhone 14.
The publication has gotten its hands on specs that show the iPhone SE 4 will use a modified version of the iPhone 14’s chassis. The dimensions of the new handset are said to perfectly match the base model iPhone 14, lacking a Touch ID home button, and instead using Face ID as a means of biometric identification.

To give readers an idea of the size differences between the current iPhone SE 3 and the upcoming iPhone SE 4, MacRumors has offered up the dimensions and weight info for both devices:
iPhone 14 dimensions and weight:
- Length: 146.7 mm
- Width: 71.5 mm
- Thickness: 7.80 mm
- Weight: 172 g
iPhone SE 3 dimensions and weight:
- Length: 138.4 mm
- Width: 67.3 mm
- Thickness: 7.3 mm
- Weight: 144 g
The iPhone SE 4 is expected to weigh 165 grams, lighter than the iPhone 14 by about 6 grams. The lowered weight is likely due to the single-camera design Apple is planning to use in the handset. The iPhone SE 4 is expected to feature a single 48-megapixel rear camera, codenamed “Portland,” with the flash located in a similar position as the SE 3. The SE 4 is expected to use a custom backplate for the device.
All previous models of the iPhone SE have used a single-camera design, so Apple’s decision to use the single-camera design makes sense. The report says Apple’s internal documentation highlights it as a key change from the iPhone 14 design.
It is expected that Apple will use most of the same material as the iPhone 14, including a glass backplate and the same 6013 T6 aluminum.
As for iPhone SE 4 colors, an iPhone SE 4 prototype has been seen boasting a black color that is reportedly similar to the Midnight finish of the iPhone 14.
While the iPhone SE 4 will be nearly identical in size to the iPhone 14, MacRumors says the device will boast two new features that will help it stand apart from the iPhone 14: a USB-C port and a multi-purpose Action button, like the one found on the iPhone 15 Pro lineup.
The Action button is a user-configurable button located above the volume buttons, replacing the traditional ringer switch, allowing users to activate the device’s camera or flashlight, record a voice memo, translate, use Magnifier, or activate Shortcuts.
Most reports suggest Apple will make the Action button a standard feature of next year’s iPhone 16 lineup, while also making it available on the iPhone SE 4, which will likely make an appearance in 2025.
As you might expect with a report like this, it is important to remember that all of this is pre-production information and there may be changes in the design and materials before mass production begins.
