Mortal Kombat 2 First Look: Johnny Cage, Kitana, and Shao Kahn Revealed

Movies and shows based on games can very quickly swing between a hit or a miss, but one title we’re excited about is Mortal Kombat 2, and the first look at the actors has confirmed that we have good reason to look forward to its release. Mortal Kombat 2 is scheduled for release on October 24 so we’re still a while away from sitting down with our popcorn to experience the tournament as it unfolds. The actor lineup has grabbed everyone’s attention at the moment, but it also comes with a surprise—some dead characters from the last film are coming back again.

One aspect we’re most excited to see is how our favorite character Kitana is portrayed in this retelling, especially considering Adeline Rudolph taking on the role. The central focus on Johnny Cage, played by Karl Urban, is also going to be very interesting. Ed Boon, co-creator of Mortal Kombat, explained that Karl’s depiction of the character with his own flair is different from what you see in the game.

How is he going to pull that off? We’ll have to stay tuned for more Mortal Kombat 2 updates to learn more.

Mortal Kombat 2 First Look: Karl Urban as Johnny Cage Is Just What We Needed

The 2021 Mortal Kombat release was a surprising success as evidenced by the $84.4 million it made worldwide. The arrival of the movie in theaters and streaming platforms simultaneously should have hindered its revenue, but the movie was still able to garner sufficient attention among gaming and non-gaming fans alike. The reviews for the movie still don’t paint the most positive of pictures, but the movie was largely a success.

There were some valid criticisms that the game received, the most telling of which was that the movie focused too much on the lead-up to the tournaments rather than the fights themselves. The entire point of the game series is the high-strung fights, and while there was some of that in the film, it wasn’t necessarily where it needed to be. This valid criticism has been taken to heart, and from what we’ve heard about Mortal Kombat 2’s first look and interviews, it’s set to be all about the tournaments this time.

Mortal Kombat 2 Returns To Tournament-Style Fights

Head of NetherRealm Studios and co-creator of Mortal Kombat, Ed Boon told Entertainment Weekly that the sequel film is all set to give fans what they’ve been asking for—tournament-centric battles. The first movie had focused on sorcerer Shang Tsung’s plans to end the champions from Earth before they could participate in the tournament, but the numbing defeat at the end of the movie freed up the planet’s contenders to participate in the big leagues.

Now, in the Mortal Kombat 2 movie, the story changes from focusing on the lead-up and instead takes us to the high-stakes tournament, where a loss for the Earthrealm will mean submission to the next villain, Shao Kahn.

“They keep score throughout the movie,” Boon told EW. “There’s a visual representation of who is winning…It’s not just a tournament for the sake of a tournament. There are huge consequences, so you really are keeping score. And there are a lot of twists in it that keep you on your toes.”

Mortal Kombat 2 Gives Us Johnny Cage, Perfected by Karl Urban

We’re expecting the sequel to beat the success of the original movie, especially considering Mortal Kombat 2’s Johnny Cage is being played by Karl Urban, a man with a thriving fanbase right now thanks to the TV show, The Boys. Of course, he also has other successful roles to his credit, but the attention this show has garnered has given him a cult following that isn’t about to be shaken off any time soon.

Karl Urban knows a thing or two about playing dark and dusty characters and his depiction of this “washed-up Hollywood guy thrown into this magical, ultra-violent thing” should set us up for some really good laughs amidst all the blood and violence we’re expecting to see. Some see him as a little too old to take on the role, but we’ll see how he performs.

The movie makers explained that while Johnny Cage’s introduction should bring in some big laughs right off the bat, there is some depth and nuance to the character with the introduction of Urban to the cast. Having a new, starkly different protagonist to follow around after MMA fighter Cole Young in the first film should give this movie a whole new spin.

Mortal Kombat 2 Actor Lineup: The Attention Is On the Stars

Yes yes, we’re all excited about Mortal Kombat 2’s Johnny Cage and how Karl Urban’s exploration of the character will shape his story, but he isn’t the only cast member we’re looking forward to. Many of the original actors from the first movie are reprising their roles, adding an element of continuity to the film.

We have Ludi Lin as Liu Kang, Jessica McNamee as Sonya Blade, Tadanobu Asano as Lord Raiden, Mehcad Brooks as Jackson Briggs, Sanada as Scorpion, Joe Taslim as Sub-Zero, and Chin Han as Shang Tsung. Japanese actor Hiroyuki Sanada had an extremely successful run in the Shogun series last year, so we’re delighted to see he hasn’t outgrown his Scorpion Mortal Kombat shoes since the original film.

Lewis Tan as Cole Young’s filmography shows he’s set to feature in the second movie as well, so it will be interesting to see how relevant his character is and how he hands over the protagonist’s robes to Johnny Cage—or whether he has a choice in the matter.

Mortal Kombat 2’s First Look Reveals Some New Faces

Apart from Karl Urban, in terms of the new Mortal Kombat 2 actor lineup, first, we have Adeline Rudolph playing our beloved Kitana. This is a big role to take on and one that fanboys will be particularly critical of if not played to perfection, but Rudolph has had some experience with the pressures of franchise films like the 2024 Hellboy and the 2022 Resident Evil series, so we’re certain she’ll do just fine.

Martyn Ford plays Outworld overlord Shao Kahn, and it will be fascinating to see how the talented bodybuilder brings life to his role after appearing in works like House of David, F9: The Fast Saga, and Kingsman: The Golden Circle. Australian actor Damon Herriman plays demon Quan Chi and is known for his roles in 2005’s House of Wax and, more recently, the 2024 release Better Man

Ana Thu Nguyen’s portrayal of Queen Sindel could be one of the highlights of the film, and we’re equally curious about Tati Gabrielle’s appearance as Jade. The movie has been written by Jeremy Slater of Moon Knight fame, so we really don’t expect to be let down by this one.

Mortal Kombat 2 Surprises: Dead Characters Make a Comeback

Josh Lawson and Max Huang are mentioned among the Mortal Kombat 2 actor lineup, even though their characters, Kano and Kung Lao, are dead. The comeback announced with the first look at Mortal Kombat 2 suggests these characters are not done with their part in the narrative.

The choice of setting the movie in the NetherRealm likely has a lot to do with the resurgence of these characters and will add another layer to how the story plays out this time.

Other Mortal Kombat 2 Updates

Mortal Kombat 2’s first-look releases have focused on the cast, both returning and new, but we’re yet to see any trailers or visual releases for what the movie will look like. There is a greater emphasis on female characters in the upcoming release which should be really fun to explore. When will the first official trailer be revealed? It is still unknown, despite the arrival of the teaser images.

The confirmation that the movie is “more intense, bigger in scale, bigger in variation, bigger across the board really as a cinematic experience” is truly all we needed to hear. Not everyone is excited about the movie and many remain skeptical about its potential, but we’ll wait to watch it and determine how we feel.

For gamers, the list of Mortal Kombat 2 surprises also includes some in-game content. Movie-accurate skins of Johnny, Kitana, Scorpio, and Shao Kahn, will arrive in the Mortal Kombat 1 video game later this year. This is a nice fun touch to promote the movie among those who might have missed the announcement of its release.

Mortal Kombat 2 will be released on October 24, 2025, so we’re going to watch for more updates and trailer releases in the coming months.
