The Right to Repair is a movement combined with state and federal laws geared towards allowing consumers to repair their own devices, including iPhones. The idea is to allow people and small businesses fair access to the tools, parts, and information necessary to maintain and fix electronic devices, appliances, and other equipment themselves.

In the summer of 2021, on the heels of the pandemic and hoping to jumpstart the economy, President Biden issued the Executive Order on Promoting Competition in the American Economy. Part of this executive order stated that: “…it is the policy of [the] Administration to enforce the antitrust laws to combat excessive concentration of industry…especially as these issues arise in…repair markets.”

President Biden’s order regarding the Right to Repair primarily focused on farmers and agricultural equipment, but its ripple effects were felt across many industries, including tech.

The order gave the Federal Trade Commission latitude to create and enforce Right to Repair regulation. According to the FTC, allowing consumers and other businesses to repair products can decrease the cost of repairs, lower electronic waste, and reduce wait times.

Apple, along with many others, has had to fall in line. Just recently, on its repair site, Apple released a number of parts and tools for fixing the iPhone 16. The primary parts include the back glass, battery, bottom speaker, camera, display, and microphone along with related tools and hardware.

Reviewing all of the available components and parts available for the iPhone 16 is pretty intimidating. It seems more for an independent electronic repair shop than the individual consumer. For example, a battery and screw kit is $99. However, it also looks like you need a battery press to secure the battery in place. That’s another $115. A display press is $216, and some tools are individually sized, ranging from $67 to $100. If you want to repair your display, a heated display removal fixture is $256.

If you’re technically inclined and looking to start a business, an Apple repair shop may be your calling. You can check out the parts and equipment here. Repair manuals are also available for most products. Better yet, Apple gives you credit towards your purchase once you ship back the parts you’re replacing. Browsing the necessary parts and tools definitely gives you a different perspective and appreciation for the iPhone. For now, I’ll stick to AppleCare. What about you?
