iPhone 15 Pro to Feature ‘Sensitivity’ Customization of Its Solid-State Button (to Benefit Case and Glove Users)

A new rumor says iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max owners will be allowed to adjust the sensitivity of the devices’ solid-state buttons, via a “Sensitivity” feature in the iOS 17 Settings app. A “reliable source” in the MacRumors forums says the new feature will allow the capacitive buttons to “work very well” with gloves and properly designed cases.

The same anonymous tipster posted earlier this week in those same forums that Apple’s iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max models will boast a new low-energy chip with an ultra-low power mode that will allow the device’s capacitive buttons to respond to a users’ touch, even if the device’s battery is completely dead.

Ever since news first broke about the iPhone 15’s new capacitive buttons, users have raised concerns over how well the buttons will work when an iPhone user is either wearing gloves or are protecting their handset with a case. However, the MacRumors tipster says a new toggle switch will be included in iOS 17’s Settings app to allow users to adjust the buttons’ sensitivity when using a case or wearing gloves.

The iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max are expected to be the only models with the solid-state capacitive buttons this year. The standard iPhone 15 models will retain the traditional mechanical button mechanism that has been used on previous iPhone models.

Earlier this week it was reported that the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max will also boast a new customizable “action button” that replaces the traditional mechanical mute switch. The Pro lineup is also expected to boast a unified volume button in place of the traditional separate up and down volume buttons.

We’ve also heard other rumors about the upcoming iPhone 15 lineup this week. Apple industry analyst Ming-Chi Kuo earlier this week said the periscope lens that will be exclusively used in the iPhone 15 Pro Max will be supplied by Taiwanese lens company Largan.

The periscope lens system would allow the light entering the iPhone’s rear-facing telephoto lens to be reflected by an angled mirror toward the camera’s image sensor, allowing Apple to squeeze a longer telephoto setup inside the handset, allowing closer zooming without blurriness.

We should see Apple debut its new iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Pro device lineup during the Cupertino firm’s media event, usually held in September. That’s when we’ll see if the rumors we’re hearing are true, or are simply whisperings in the wind.
